chip & dale are dead

In general blatherings on September 29, 2007 at 1:40 pm

If you’re squeamish, or if you have a particular affinity for squirrels, please quickly scroll down past this post ~ you probably don’t want to see these pictures. They’re not gross by any means, but if you like squirrels or are very sensitive, you might just need to skip this post.

We have 2 little squirrels who play in our yard. I’m not sure exactly where they live, but I think they probably make their homes in one of our trees. Just about any time of day we can sit on the deck in our backyard and watch these 2 squirrels chase each other around, running all over the yard, chasing each other up and down trees, jumping from one tree to the next. Jake (our black Lab) has gotten to the point where he actually ignores these 2 squirrels ~ they’re always around, and he just doesn’t seem to notice them anymore. We’ve named them Chip and Dale (yes, I know the real Chip & Dale are chipmunks, but they’re always together, and they’re the only funny rodents we know of).

Roger went out to mow the yard yesterday, and he discovered that our little squirrels had finally met their match. Apparently they have been chewing on a power box on one of the telephone poles.

Phone_jack_side

At some point, they managed to come in contact with a live wire and were zapped. The really sad thing (or funny thing, depending on your point of view) is it wasn’t just one of them, it was BOTH of them! Ok, so, imagine you’re a squirrel. You’re standing around watching your buddy gnaw away on something ~ you’ve been there a couple of times already, and you know that whatever it is your squirrel buddy is chewing on really doesn’t taste all that good. But, you keep coming back for a few more gnaws now and then, hoping maybe there’s something really yummy stored inside.

Then, all of a sudden, your squirrel buddy starts shaking, and he lights up like a Christmas tree for a second or two. Then ~ WOW!~ he does the best jump he’s ever made, except he’s not jumping to another tree ~ he’s just flying through the air. When he finally hits the ground, he just lies there. You chitter at him, but he doesn’t move. Then, curiosity gets the best of you. You’re thinking something along the lines of, "Hmmm ~ Dale must’ve found something really awesome to jump that far then immediately go to sleep! I think I’ll have a taste, too!"

That thought, unfortunately, is the last and final thought that ever passes through your pea-sized brain.

Dead_squirrels_and_pole

Both squirrels, BOTH squirrels, are lying dead about 4 feet from the telephone pole! I must admit, when Roger told me about finding the chewed-on box and the dead squirrels, I laughed. I mean, come on! Honestly, how can you NOT chuckle at the thought of 2 squirrels ending up dead after chewing on a power box on the telephone pole! One dead squirrel would be a bit sad ~ but two, together, at the same time?! It really makes you wonder, what in the world was the second squirrel thinking?!

what were we thinking?

In general blatherings on September 26, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Hallie at Confessions from the Rubber Room wrote this post about what passed for fashion in the 1980’s. I got a huge kick out of it ~ I even left a comment, which is not the norm for me. I read a LOT of other people’s blogs, but only a few of those bloggers are even aware I exist.

Anyway, Hallie’s post made me laugh, so I just had to comment. She sent me an email back and basically DARED me to share my picture of me and Roger in our 1984 prom attire. And you know I’m not one to pass up a great dare (that’s how this whole blogging thing of mine got started in the first place, don’tcha know!).

First the disclaimer: I know this picture is absolutely horrible. The thing is ~ I don’t have an actual picture/print. This photo is a slide, and this digital copy is the best I could do. So, horrible color, lighting, shadows and focus aside ~ the point is to show you my lovely mauve/pink dress and Roger’s matching mauve bowtie and cumberbund (you gotta love a guy who will wear mauve, grey and silver to a dance just so his tux won’t clash with his date’s dress!!)

As Hallie put it ~ what were we thinking?!

the never-ending quest for organization

In a joyful home on September 25, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Wow ~ I had no idea there were so many other ladies out there who really need/want help getting organized for the holidays! My 12-Week Holiday Planner for the Christian Family has been a HUGE hit with the ladies at my church and homeschool co-op, not to mention all of you lovely ladies out there in bloggityville who have sent me emails asking about it.

Having attacked the holiday organization monster, I’ve decided to take a step further into the world of organized living. I’m going all out here ~ I’ve made a menu plan! This is a huge deal for me, because, truth be told, I’m really a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kinda gal. I’ve known for years I needed to make up a menu ~ I just haven’t wanted to do it. Too much work. But I’m feeling pretty good about this one.

I’ve made a 5-week menu plan, with room for flexibility incase Roger decides he REALLY wants steak on Saturday night, or if we have company. And it hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be. It’s definitely going to make grocery shopping easier. As you may know, I dislike grocery shopping, and Roger is such a dear to brave the world of the commissary for me, but armed with my trusty bi-weekly grocery list I may be able to manage the commissary on my own.

fall into reading 2007

In joyful reading on September 23, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Well, it’s that time again. Time to put together a list of books I hope to be able to read this fall. Katrina’s (Callapidder Days) Fall Into Reading 2007 challenge has begun. (If you want to play along, click here or on the image above.)

Taking a cue from a few other bloggers who have participated in past challenges, I’ve decided to make my list a little more varied than my summer reading list. My summer list was all Christian fiction. Of course, my reading taste is much wider than just Christian fiction ~ the summer list was actually made easy for me because of all of the books I agreed to read and review for a couple of different blog alliances/tours. I am still committing to read some books for these groups, but I think for the fall reading list I’m going to leave myself some room to throw in other types of books as well.

My list is not in any particular order ~ I’ll just pick up whatever book looks the most interesting at the time I need new to read! ;)

The first book on my list is a no-brainer if you know me or have read my blog for any length of time at all. My Bible is always first on my list! :)

Fiction

Informed Consent by Sandi Glahn

Scarlet by Stephen Lawhead

Boo Humbug! by Rene Gutteridge

The Hand That Bears The Sword by George Bryan Polivka (I loved the first book in this trilogy, The Legend of the Firefish!)

The Minor Protection Act by Jodi Cowles

Finding Father Christmas by Robin Jones Gunn

Family/Parenting

The Mom Walk by Sally Clarkson

Age of Opportunity by Paul Tripp (re-read)

Health

Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual by Devin Starlanyl (re-read)

Living with Chronic Pain by Jennifer P. Schneider

Nonfiction

Mosaicby Amy Grant

Living Simply by Joanne Heim

I know that’s a pitiful start, but it’s all I have right now. As other interesting reads come along I’ll add them to the list. One thing I’m taking into account is that the holidays are fast approaching, and as much as I love to read, there are other commitments I need to attend (sadly, I won’t have as much time to read with getting ready for the holidays, but I WILL be organized!).

I have had several people ask me about the 12-Week Holiday Planner for the Christian Family. I just bought it about a week and a half ago, but I have already printed it out, put it in a 3-ring binder, looked the whole thing over, and even added a couple of baking and freezer meal making days!

I saw today that Marilyn Moll has a new ebook out that compliments The 12-Week Holiday Planner ~ and they’re offering the two ebooks together as a package deal. Marilyn is an awesome Titus 2 woman with a fantastic website ~ The Urban Homemaker. I love her bread recipies.

If you want to check out the combination of The 12-Week Planner and Marilyn’s new ebook The Holiday Open House click here.

Abcs

Our assignment this week is to use the letters of the alphabet to describe ourselves or things that are important to us. So, here goes:

Apprentice

Beliver

Capable

Disciple

Evangelism

Fun

Gratitude

Helpmeet

Inquisitive

Jewel

Kindness

Loving

Mom

Neighbor

Observant

Parent

Quite (!)

Reader

Student

Teacher

Understanding

Vivacious

Willing

Xuberant (I know, but it’s the best I could do!)

Youth

Zest

As I made this list, I only put down the first word that popped into my mind for each letter. Many of the letters had several words that I thought applied, but I went with the first word I thought of.

This week’s scripture:

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. He is

" ‘the stone you builders rejected,

    which has become the capstone.’

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

I’m not exactly sure how I originally found Meredith’s blog ~ most likely by following one of my famous rabbit trails through the blogosphere ~ but this is one of the blogs on my list of bookmarked (favorite) blogs. I have enjoyed catching glimpses of her life and family through her blog ~ and I’m hoping to be able to meet her IRL next February/March while we’re in Colorado for our niece’s wedding! :)

I actually spent a large portion of the day OUTSIDE!! I haven’t been able to do that in a long time. Jake (my black Lab) was SSSOOOO happy to be able to hang out outside ~ he was more than content to sit in the yard and chew on his tennis ball.

In other news ~ Roger’s spider bite seems to be getting better, but not at rocket speed. More like snail-in-the-winter-in-Alaska speed. There’s definitely been improvement since the doc added the 3rd antibiotic on Wednesday, but it’s nowhere near being all better. Hopefully that antibiotic will kick in and heal things up soon. Roger has spent the entire week sleeping on the couch with his leg propped up on pillows. I’m pretty sure he’s really tired of that.

Roger’s mom called last night to tell us our niece, Angie, was in the hospital with a blood clot behind her collarbone. Very weird. Angie just turned 27 on Monday, and a blood clot isn’t something you expect to hear about in someone her age ~ especially considering she’s a big time runner (like running marathons kind of big time runner), and she’s pretty health conscious. The doctors decided to operate and remove the clot today; Norma said they’re expecting to release Angie in a few days.

12-week holiday planner

In Uncategorized on September 14, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Last week I set up a 12-week family planner for the holiday season. Yep ~ I’m already thinking ahead to Thanksgiving and Christmas. The catalyst was volunteering to host our Home Team Christmas party at my house. I’m actually really looking forward to it. Never mind that Roger will be TDY for the first two weeks of December ~ I’m hosing our Christmas party December 1st. I’m sorry Roger will have to miss it ~ I guess I’ve just gotten so used to him having to miss things that it isn’t bothering me as much as it probably should. Kathryn said she would help me with set up and food ~ that’s really all I need.

Anyway, I found a great 12-week holiday planner and I have put it to use already. I added a section for heavy hors d’ouvres recipes and party plans. I also added a few extra freezer meal making days and holiday baking days. I’ve been scouring the internet for ideas on small gifts for the other members of our Home Team family as well as ideas for homemade Christmas gifts for our extended family.

The thing is, I’m planning now so I won’t have to go into panic mode when the holidays get closer. I always have big plans of finding great Christmas gifts and purchasing them throughout the year ~ my plans never carry through. I don’t like shopping (other than shopping on the internet in my pajamas from the comfort of my office chair!), so finding great Christmas gifts ~ with the intention of finding them ON SALE ~ throughout the year isn’t very realistic for me. As much as I would love to be able to say I’m organized enough to actually get this done, I’m not. So instead, I search the internet for good ideas. It fits me, my lifestyle, and my desire to not have to put real clothes and make-up on just to fight the crowds at a sale! :)

Now that I have plans and an actual organizational system started, all I have to do is find the time and supplies to MAKE those wonderful little gifts for our Home Team family and extended family members. Party plans are easy ~ making heavy hors d’ouvres and decorating for a party are not too difficult. The cleaning that takes place before hand? Well, I’ll have to recruit a family member or two (can you say teenage boys?! I may have to ask Grace, Elizabeth, Paige and Caitlin ~ four of my most favorite young ladies ~ if they’ll help me!). For some reason the cleaning always stresses me more than the cooking or decorating. It probably has something to do with the fact that I actually enjoy decorating and I don’t mind the cooking ~ since I know there will be EATING when all of the cooking is done! ;)

So, I have everything planned out on paper for the weeks of October 3 through December 25. For the first time in my life, I feel as though I may actually be prepared for the holidays.

Our assignment this week for Blogger Friend School is to look at the picture we posted last week that shows our “dream place” to blog, then use our imagination to create a dream place where we really DO blog. Well……..LOL, this is the picture of my “dream place” I posted last week:

Umm…yeah. I don’t think I’ll be able to create anything even close to that around here! Please consider that this picture was taken in Banff ~ which is in Canada ~ and I live in Arkansas. Absolutely NO similarities, whatsoever!

So. This is where I blog ~ and to be honest, other than NOT being in a cabin at the edge of a lake in the mountains, it’s not so bad. ;)

The window offers a nice view of my backyard and the field that is just on the other side of the barbed wire fence. The barbed wire fence is to keep the cows that roam the field out of our yard ~ so sometimes there are cows back there, and they’re kind of fun to watch, especially the calves who like to play and chase each other around……

Anyway, I digress. Back to the Blogger Friends School assignment. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of room to be “creative” with my blogging space since my computer is a desktop, which is actually connected to my desk top……..

As you can see to the right of my desk, I have a pile of books to give away, and I have a wonderful assortment of lovely scented candles to choose from. I used to have a candle business, and it went very well while we were in Alaska (my first 4 months in business I sold over $10,000 in candles!), but once we got back to Arkansas and my fibromyalgia flared to monumental proportions the candle business sort of fizzled. Having all of these candles does have some advantages ~ I can burn a candle and create just about any atmosphere through scent that I want. Today’s scents are Pumpkin Spice (my absolute, all-time favorite) and White Christmas. I’m SO ready for fall ~ at least I’m able to create the SCENTS of fall and the holidays in my home. :)

My verse for this week is:

I delight greatly in the Lord: my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.

Isaiah 61: 10-11

quick wednesday post

In general blatherings, home & family life on September 12, 2007 at 10:06 pm

This will have to be a really quick post ~ I just thought I should put this up so you’ll know what’s been going on.

The short story: Roger got bit last Thursday by a spider that had an MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; click here to see the Mayo Clinic’s web page about MRSA) ~ bad, bad, bad. The spider bit him on his left shin ~ almost the entire front area of his shin is red, swollen, hot and infected. He’s on 3 types of antibiotics and Vicodin, lying on the sofa with his leg propped up. Needless to say, he’s on convalescent leave for the entire week. The good news: he should be fine, we just have to keep an eye on it and make sure we go back to the doctor if it’s not improving by Friday.

Some other good news: the plumber installed a new faucet in my kitchen, replaced the leaky spigot outside, put new "innards" in the toilet in the master bath, and is coming back tomorrow to replace the entire faucet apparatus in the boys’ bathtub. AND the dishwasher repair guy FINALLY returned with the part to repair my dishwasher, and it actually works again!

Take the 100 Acre Personality Quiz!

LOL This is funny to me because this week Sawyer and I have been having conversations about how the other kids in the youth group and homeschool co-op perceive me to be. Apparently there are 2 girls in particular who think I’m "mean" and they’re not shy about letting everyone know about it! Of course, there are several other girls who would agree that I am "warm and loving" ~ actually, I think they’d agree with the whole "Kanga" characterization!

free lavender & lace patterns

In good stuff on September 7, 2007 at 1:00 am

I have been looking around the internet at different "traditions" and ideas for Christmas. Yes, I know Christmas is still 3 1/2 months away. No, I am NOT one of those people who thinks commercialized Christmases are wonderful. Quite the opposite, in fact. I firmly believe that the Christmas season, the season in which Christians celebrate the birth of Our Lord and Savior, has been grossly commercialized ~ CHRIST has been taken out of CHRISTmas.

I won’t get started on my soap box ~ no, that wasn’t even close to being "started on my soap box" ~ really.

Ok, back to the original topic of this post. As I have been poking around the internet looking for different free Christmas patterns, unit studies, traditions and such, I have come across quite a few (what I consider to be ) great sites.

This evening I discovered a site that simply thrilled my socks off! :) As you may (or may not) know, I’m a crafter. Crafter, not sewer or seamstress. I love to knit, crochet and cross stitch. I have always been enamored with Lavender & Lace patterns ~ there’s just something about them that makes me sigh with pleasure. Well, tonight I discovered a site with FREE Lavender & Lace Christmas patterns, in PDF! Gracious, me oh my ~ my fingers are itching to take up the Aida cloth or linen and get started on some magnificent works of art!

You will find the patterns here. They start with a specially designed angel from 1986 and go through 2005 (one design for each year). That’s 20 free Christmas cross stitch patterns! The first pattern marked Lavender & Lace (as far as I could tell) is 1992’s Christmas Angel.

Thank you, Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum, for supplying the beautiful patterns!

[ Special notice: If you decide to download/use Marilyn's patterns, please, please, PLEASE respect her copyright and restrictions for use. She has shown such love and graciousness in making these patterns available on the internet at no cost ~ it is the least we can do to honor her rights and requests.]

I have bookmarked several other sites with great Christmas resources (most of the free) that I will be sharing occasionally. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do. :)

thankful thursday

In a joyful heart on September 6, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Even though I’ve been on a bit of an extended blogging break which is meant to aid in helping me clear my head and get me back on track, it has been a LONG week!
With that in mind, it’s a wonderful time for me to be reminded of everything I have to be thankful for ~ here are just a few of those things:

I’m thankful that God has provided us with the ability to homeschool our youngest son.
I’m thankful that our oldest son is able to attend a school that challenges him and offers him opportunities he wouldn’t be given if he attended the local high school.
I’m thankful for our homeschool co-op and all of the moms/teachers who are involved.
I’m thankful for friends who are true; they certainly have been a blessing this week!
I’m thankful that God has given Roger and me an opportunity to minister to others in our church through involvement in a Home Team.
I’m thankful for all of the daily blessings that are so easy to take for granted ~ our home, Roger’s job, the gift God has given our family by allowing me to stay at home, two working vehicles, (mostly) working appliances, electricity, plumbing (just try going without the last two for a while, you’ll agree they’re blessings and should be given thanks for! LOL).
I’m thankful that I will be able to go to Wyoming to see my mom in October.
I’m thankful to be married to a wonderful husband who loves God, loves me, and loves his children.
I’m thankful that soon we will be experiencing the beautiful colors and cooler temperatures of fall (my favorite time of year) ~ what an amazing God we have Who could think of such beauty in each individual season!
I’m thankful for the sacrifice God made in sending His Son to shed His blood and pay the price for my sins, so that I could have a relationship with Him and eternal life by His grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
I’m thankful that #10, in a nut shell, really says everything I could possibly say. :)

bfs assignment #1

In homeschooling on September 5, 2007 at 10:28 am

Our first Blogger Friend School assignment is a "getting to know you" type of exercise.

I first heard about blogging from my kids ~ I have 2 teenage sons. They were telling me about some friends’ blogs they had been reading. I laughed and made a smart-alec comment about getting a blog and blogging myself. My kids were horrified; then they did something they really should know better than to do. They CHALLENGED me! The younger one said I’d never be able to figure out how to blog, and the older one said that I wouldn’t have anything to blog about. Well, I took them up on their challenge, and here I am, over a year later, with over 425 posts on my blog. I think I figured it out, and I guess I must have found a few things to blog about ! LOL

My personal goals for blogging are different than my personal goals for journaling. My blogging goals are simply to use this blog as a creative outlet ~ I pretty much write about whatever strikes my fancy. My blog is also a way for me to communicate with our family and friends ~ we’re a military family, so we have friends all over the world, and our family all live in different states. On my blog I write about the usual family happenings, post pictures, and try to keep everyone up-to-date about things going on in our home.

If I could live in that one perfect place, and of course blog from there, it would be a cabin in the mountains near a lake.

Cabinnearlakeoharabanffnpalbertacan

I usually blog during the day ~ I have been known to blog in the evenings, but I generally try not to since my husband is home and I want to be able to spend time with him. Since my boys are both older, and only the younger one still lives at home, I usually have time during the day to write and to visit other people’s blogs.

My favorite drink ~ hmmm, that’s a little difficult to pinpoint. My son came up with a concoction of raspberry lemonade and pink lemonade mixed together with 7Up that’s pretty lip-smackin’ good. I have been known to drink raspberry tea by the gallons. I also enjoy a good cup of hot tea or cocoa as well. Oh, and let’s not forget my favorite coffee ~ 2 shots of decaf espresso, 2 shots of vanilla syrup, steamed half & half (no froth, thank you), topped with whipped cream. Yummy!

My favorite book? I read waaayyy too much to have an absolute favorite, but I do have several I have enjoyed reading more than once: Byzantium by Stephen Lawhead, The Celtic Crusades Series by Stephen Lawhead, The Legend of the Firefish by George Bryan Polivka, and in the non-fiction category would be Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp and Age of Opportunity by Paul Tripp.

My favorite dessert would have to be brownies right out of the oven. Throw in some vanilla ice cream and you can’t go wrong!

I would have to say my life verse would be

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

I’m looking forward to reading the first assignment posts from other Blogger Friend School participants. If you are a homeschooler and would like to participate, please visit Training Hearts’s Blogger Friend School page.

great news!

In tickle my funny bone on September 5, 2007 at 9:15 am

Subject: much awaited news for me and you(?)

Diet Questions Answered

Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this
true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it… don’t
waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up
your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can
extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer?
Take a nap.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and
corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an
efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?
Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy
vegetable).
And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of
vegetable products.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine,
that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even
more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms
up!
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one.
If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular
exercise program?

A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain…Good!
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU’RE NOT LISTENING!!!…. Foods are fried these days in vegetable
oil.
In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be
bad for you?
———— ——— ——— ———— ——— ———
———
-

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the
middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You
should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It’s the best
feel-good food around!

———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.
———— ——— ——— ——— ——— ——— ———
—-

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! ‘Round’ is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had
about food and diets.

And remember:
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
skid in sideways – Chardonnay in one hand – chocolate in the other -
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO! What a
Ride"

AND……

For those of you who watch what you eat, here’s the final word on
nutrition and health. It’s a relief to know the truth after all those
conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like.  Speaking English is apparently what kills
you

the gathering

In home & family life, tickle my funny bone on September 4, 2007 at 7:00 pm

This is what I found in our sons’ TV room Saturday morning:

Sleepover

If you look closely, you will note there are not just 3 but rather 4 sleeping creatures ~ 3 on the futon, 1 (the brown lump) on the floor. At one time, all 4 creatures had somehow managed to situate themselves comfortably enough on the futon to all fall asleep. Apparently "the brown lump" got tired of being crowded and having other creatures’ feet in his face (and who could blame him for that?!).

This is only half the number of males in the 14 to 16 year old range who gathered at my home Friday evening. Patrick was home for the weekend as well, but "The Gathering" was strictly Sawyer’s doing. Apparently it was quite the hit ~ more pizzas were eaten than I thought humanly possible by 8 boys (of course, when I bought the pizzas I did not realize the reigning pizza-eating champ would be attending our little get-together), lots and lots of Pepsi and Mountain Dew were consumed, football and glow-in-the-dark Frisbee were played, and the trampoline was used as a wrestling mat. Oh yes ~ and the main reason for The Gathering ~ hours upon hours of Halo.

I must admit, I’m getting old. These boys far outlasted me ~ I fell asleep, completely exhausted, on the couch around 1:30am (Roger had LONG been in bed, which only proves that he’s significantly closer to the official ranking of Dinosaur than I am). I recall being briefly awakened around 3:00am when the boys took a beverage break. From what I can piece together, the boys fell asleep around 6:00am, after having competed in umpteen hours of active, aggressive (though well-ordered) Halo playing.

As the parents arrived Saturday around noon to retrieve their sons, I heard the passel of boys decrying, "Let’s do this again next weekend at MY house!"

Moms, I wish you well. I have done my time ~ it’s now someone else’s turn. Be forewarned ~ the reigning pizza-eating champion will most likely show up at your house, too, so be prepared! LOL

[A quick note about the pizza-eating champion, who does NOT belong to me, and is NOT pictured above ~ I have no idea how his mother manages to feed him enough to keep him hale and hearty. His mother, you see, is a petite 5' maybe 5' 1" short tall, tiny-boned ~ not just small-boned, TINY-boned ~woman who weighs no more than 100 pounds soaking wet. Her son the pizza champ, on the other hand, is at least a foot taller than she, and probably weighs close to 100 pounds more than she does. He eats in one meal what she eats in a week!]

summer reading list

In Uncategorized on September 3, 2007 at 8:00 am

The Summer Reading Challenge has come to an end. And surprisingly enough, only 2 books on my list remain unread! I’m very pleased. I knew I was setting a fairly high goal for myself ~ summer may mean no school, but it also means lots of fun and activities away from home! When I go to someone’s house I don’t usually take a book with me (how rude would that be?!) ~ I spent quite a lot of time at my friend Kathryn’s house, or running around all over the place with her. So, I guess I could say Kathryn’s the reason I didn’t reach my goal. LOL (Of course, I’m NOT saying that ~ I was just kidding!)

Anyway, here’s my list. The titles are all linked to Amazon if you want to purchase a copy of any of the books on my list (and any purchases you make from Amazon by using a link on my blog will help me when I buy books from Amazon we need for our homeschool).

Yada Yada Prayer Group ~ Neta Jackson

Set Sail for Murder ~ Carolyn Hart

The Mom Walk: Keeping in Step with God’s Heart for Motherhood ~ Sally Clarkson

Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la ~ Barbara Edtl Shelton

I’m halfway through Black Ice, and I do intend to read The Yada Yada Prayer Group and all of its sequels. I’ve also managed to get ahold of several other books through PaperbackSwap that aren’t on my list. I may have to find a fall reading challenge to join just so I can stay motivated to read. Although, I wish I could find a knitting challenge and a crochet challenge. I have a lot of half-done projects that I really need to finish!

(By the way, yes, I’m still on a short blogging break. I typed several posts ahead of time and had them set to publish on certain dates. That way I won’t miss publishing any posts that I had committed to posting.)
